NYO SOCCER RULES (Edited 8/1/2023)

U6 NYO Soccer- Rules

Please apply the laws of the game as established by FIFA, except as herein noted:

Ball size: Size 3

Shin guards & Cleats: All players are to wear shin gears & soccer cleats for practice and games.

No Headers!

Duration of Match:

·       (4) 8-minute quarters. 2-minute break between quarters. 5-minute halftime.

Number of Players on the field per team: 4 players on each side.

Flip the Coin/Rock Paper Scissors: The winner of the coin toss (or rock paper scissors) gets the ball to start the game.

Corner Kicks: Opponents must be at the goal box to allow the kicker to put the ball into play.

Penalty Area:

·       No penalty area. No penalty kicks.

Substitutions:

·       Coaches may sub kids in at any dead ball

·       Coaches let each other know when substitutions are being made

Throw-ins: One chance to throw-in. In U6- players have one opportunity to redo their throw-in, and if they make a mistake again, then the opposing team has the throw in (Feet are planted, ball behind the head, and two hands)

Offsides: No offsides

Referees: No Referees. 1 coach from each team can be on the field during play.

Goalie:

·       There are no goalies in U6

·       No “designated defenders- in goal”

·       All players are field players

Players Playing Time:

·       All players must have meaningful playing time during regular season games (Rules, Bylaws & Code of Conduct #8)

Coaches Code of Conduct:

·       All coaches will follow and respect the Coaches Code of Conduct

·       All coaches agreed to the Code of Conduct when they agreed to volunteer with NYO Soccer. The NYO Soccer Code of Conduct can be found on our website www.nyosoccer.com under “site links” Code of Conduct

·       Failure to comply with the Code of Conduct will be subject to disciplinary action by the NYO Soccer Board

U8 NYO Soccer- Rules

Please apply the laws of the game as established by FIFA, except as herein noted:

Ball size: Size 3

U10 NYO Soccer- Rules

Please apply the laws of the game as established by FIFA, except as herein noted:

Ball size: Size 4

Shin guards & Cleats: All players are to wear shin gears & soccer cleats for practice and games. *Referee’s do a shin guard and cleat check before each game for each team*

No Headers!- If a player accidently or intentionally heads the ball, the referee will stop the play and a direct kick will be given to the other team at the place of the foul.

Duration of Match:

·       (4) 12-minute quarters. 5-minute halftime

Number of Players on the field per team: 7 players on each side, one of which is a goalie (6 in the field, one in goal)

Jewelry: All jewelry must be removed prior to the game. If earrings are new, they may be taped.

Flip the Coin/Rock Paper Scissors: The winner of the coin toss (or rock paper scissors) gets the ball to start the game.

Offsides: most offsides (if not all) will not be called

·       Coaches- Be respectful of the soccer rules and not have players “cherry pick”

·       Refs have been informed to still call offside if it is blatant offside, or coaches are encouraged to also help ref call these types of offsides as well to help the players learn the game

Corner Kicks: Opponents must be at the 18-yard (penalty box) to allow the kicker to put the ball into play.

 

Goal Kicks: Team with possession- anyone can kick the ball and teammates can remain in 18-yard (penalty box). Ball is placed in one corner of 6-yard box (goalie box), usually on the side of goal in which the ball went out on end line.

Ball at Center: Ball may be kicked in any direction to start a game and/or resume game after a goal.

Direct Kicks (free kicks): are given at the center referee’s discretion.

·       Generally, opponents must be 10-yards (30 feet) from the ball to allow the ball to be put into play.

Indirect Kicks: will not be called in u10.

Fouls inside the penalty box:

·       Inside the penalty box results in a penalty kick

·       Hand ball by the defending team (not including the goalie) inside the penalty box results in a penalty kick for the attacking team

·       Any player on the field at the time of the foul may take the penalty kick (It does not need to be the player in which the foul happened to)

·       The player must place the ball on the white space & goalie must be on the goal line and not come off the goal line until ball is kicked

·       The kicker must wait on referee’s whistle before taking the penalty kick

Substitutions:

·       SUBSTITUTION IS ONLY ALLOWED BY THE CENTER REFEREE! Either team may substitute whenever there is a dead-ball situation (corner kick, goal kick, throw-in, etc.)

·       Sub needs to be at the CENTER LINE so the referee can call them in.

Throw-ins: One chance to throw-in. In U10- players have one opportunity to redo their throw-in, and if they make a mistake again, then the opposing team has the throw in (Feet are planted, ball behind the head, and two hands)

Injured players: Injured players must stay on the ground to let the ref know they are hurt so the ref can immediately stop play. At that time a sub needs to go in and an injured player be taken out. Injured players are allowed to re-enter the game on the next substitution opportunity (if they are well enough to do so.).

Goalie: Need to have a different jersey or penny to show they are the goalies. They can touch the ball with their hands within the 6-yard box (goalie box)/ 18-yard box (penalty box). The Goalie can drop kick/punt or throw it back out after saving it. *If a goalie picks up the ball OR uses their hands OUTSIDE THE 18 YARD BOX (penalty box) the referee will call a hand ball and a direct kick will be given to the other team at the place of the foul.

·       **ALL players will have an opportunity to play goalie throughout the season regardless of skill level**

·       Unless a child is unable to participate as goalie due to underlying medical issues, a parent rises a concern or a child has a medical problem, each child should experience a minimum of ½ of a game (30minutes) as a goalie.

This allows players to experience the position of goalie. It still allows the game to remain competitive, but also allows players to try different positions throughout the field. It allows players to learn the terminology that goalies will use, it also allows players to learn where and what goalies can and cannot do. It is important players learn these skills as they learn the game of soccer whether they become a goalie or not, as it will help their understanding of their game.

·       1-2 players per game in goal* unless there is an injury (1 player per half is recommended as this will allow each player an opportunity to play goalie in a game setting at least once throughout the season)

·       NO team is to only have 1-2 designated goalies for the entire season.

Players Playing Time:

·       All players must have meaningful playing time during regular season (Rules, Bylaws & Code of Conduct #8)

·       All players will play and try different positions throughout the field, including goalie.

Coaches Code of Conduct:

·       All coaches will follow and respect the Coaches Code of Conduct

·       All coaches agreed to the Code of Conduct when they agreed to volunteer with NYO Soccer. The NYO Soccer Code of Conduct can be found on our website www.nyosoccer.com under “site links” Code of Conduct

U12 NYO Soccer- Rules

Please apply the laws of the game as established by FIFA, except as herein noted:

Ball size: Size 4

Shin guards & Cleats: All players are to wear shin gears & soccer cleats for practice and games. *Referee’s do a shin guard and cleat check before each game for each team*

Duration of Match:

·       (2) 30-minute halves. 5min half-time break.

·       In extreme heat, please see other coach and referee before beginning game à 5min water break at 15min in each half**

Number of Players on the field per team: 9 players on each side, one of which is a goalie (8 in the field, one in goal)

Flip the Coin/Rock Paper Scissors: The winner of the coin toss (or rock paper scissors) gets the ball to start the game.

Jewelry: All jewelry must be removed prior to the game. If earrings are new, they may be taped.

Offsides: Offsides will be enforced by the Center referee and side line referee(s). The opposing team will kick the ball where the offsides occurs.

Corner Kicks: Opponents must be at the 18-yard (penalty box) to allow the kicker to put the ball into play.

Goal Kicks: Team with possession- anyone can kick the ball and teammates can remain in 18-yard (penalty box). Ball is placed in one corner of 6-yard box (goalie box), usually on the side of goal in which the ball went out on end line.

Direct Kicks (free kicks): are given at the center referee’s discretion. A direct kick (free kick)- no player needs to touch the ball between the kick and the goal, before it enters the goal for it to count as a goal.

·       Generally, opponents must be 10 yds (30 feet) from the ball to allow the ball to be put into play.

Indirect Kicks: An indirect kick- an additional player needs to touch the ball between the kick and the goal, before it enters the goal for it to count as a goal. Indirect Kicks are given at the center referee’s discretion for the following:

1.   *Deliberate/intentional pass back to goalie- player from same team passes the ball back to goalie deliberately with the intent for them to pick up the ball.

o  If the referee calls a deliberate pass back to goalie, and the call is made WITHIN the 18-yard (penalty box), including the 6-yard box, the indirect kick will take place at the top of the 18-yard box where the referee places the ball.

2.   No Headers! If a player accidently or intentionally heads the ball, the referee will stop the play and an indirect kick will be given at the place of the foul.

o  If the header takes place WITHIN the 18-yard box (penalty box), including the 6-yard box, the indirect kick will take place at the top of the 18-yard box where the referee places the ball.
